Caspar Fairhall is a visual artist working across various media, from painting to video and interactive art.

His work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, The University of Western Australia, Edith Cowan University, Chamber of Commerce and Industry and BankWest, amongst others. Amongst other awards, Caspar won the Cossack Art Award (Best Overall Artwork) in 2012 and the Invited Artist Award in 2013.

Fairhall is represented by Blockprojects Gallery, Melbourne and Kamilė Gallery, Perth.

Solo exhibition at Kamilė Gallery | State Buildings, Perth

My solo exhibition opens from 5 pm on 1 December at Kamilė Gallery’s State Buildings space — it would be wonderful to see you there.

The exhibition will be opened by Dr Robert Cook, Curator of Design and International Art at The Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Mountains rest, overwhelmed by stars

Mountains rest, overwhelmed by stars is a video work that develops the themes of space and time with a particular reference to differing timescales. Its starting point is an apparent paradox: that the things we regard as motionless (such as stars and mountains) are in fact in a continual process of change.

Solo exhibition: Elision at Art Collective WA

The paintings in my latest solo exhibition seek to invite you to play with the notion that pictures are paradoxes. They are simultaneously flat and illusionistic, motionless, while having a sense of embodied time. In these paintings and works on paper, you can see architectural elements take on the qualities of eroded geology. In turn, geology becomes abstract pattern, and I have used flat geometric forms to build ambiguous spatial structures.

Symposium paper and exhibition at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, China

On 30 June I’ll be delivering a paper at the symposium Letter from the East at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China. The exhibition held in tandem with the symposium will include my two channel video work and a suite of related drawings.

Void, drawing, time, space and colour

I wrote this essay in late 2020 for the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s WA Living Artist Archive as part of its AGWA Foundation COVID-19 Stimulus Package for artists in the State Collection. I’d like to thank the Art Gallery of Western Australia, AGWA Foundation and the Government of Western Australia for their support during this difficult time.

How to survive your exhibition

There is an experience common to many, and, I strongly suspect, to most artists. This experience, despite its apparent near-ubiquity, is almost never discussed. Whenever I have raised the topic with fellow artists, they will usually acknowledge its reality, but it seems that no one wants to discuss it. The experience I’m referring to, of course, is that of post-exhibition blues.

Notes on the development of visual ideas

This paper was delivered at the symposium Letter from the east • Carrying, held at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China on 17 December, 2018. My works in this exhibition consist of a series of drawings I did in the Swiss Alps between July and October of 2018, as well as a two channel video work that resulted from these studies.
