Its starting point is an apparent paradox: that the things we regard as motionless (such as stars and mountains) are in fact in a continual process of change.
Read moreThe paintings in my latest solo exhibition seek to invite you to play with the notion that pictures are paradoxes. They are simultaneously flat and illusionistic, motionless, while having a sense of embodied time. In these paintings and works on paper, you can see architectural elements take on the qualities of eroded geology. In turn, geology becomes abstract pattern, and I have used flat geometric forms to build ambiguous spatial structures.
Read moreOn 30 June I’ll be delivering a paper at the symposium Letter from the East at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang, China. The exhibition held in tandem with the symposium will include my two channel video work and a suite of related drawings.
Read moreI have been invited by the prestigious China Academy of Art in Hangzhou (CAA) to run a four week workshop, alongside Professors Tian jin, Wang Zhi peng and Fan li. Entitled Expanding the Visual Field, the workshop will focus on the representation of space and time in visual art, and the productively paradoxical nature of visual representation. Open to postgraduate students across the academy, the project will encourage collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to exploring the topic.
